Mine used to occasionally throw a check engine light when the o2 sensor was playing up, can't remember the code but it was obviously that, only problem was it wasn't consistent. If you do get the o2 sensor out I believe there is a method for testing it using the kitchen hob (guessing it needs to be gas), but as usual it requires time, one thing I;m similarly lacking

as said it could be plugs or it might be the lambda sensor (very often the 2nd one causes issues like that) but normally that throws a check engine light even if its intermittent. Mine felt like it had a misfire with the plugs once before they were changed and sounds similar to yours.

Thanks again, guys. I tried to get the plugs out at lunchtime today but wasn't convinced that I had the right spark plug socket and gave up. Looking online, looks like I have and I'm just not trying hard enough. 10mm is what I've read. I'll try again at the weekend.

It's been behaving much better recently although still not perfect. I've used the torque app to log a load of stuff which I was quite impressed with. I'm such a geek!

Gave it a good VTECing between roundabouts on the way to Surrey yesterday. Much to my dismay, it started hunting (revs bouncing around between 1-2k rpm at idle). Seems to have gone away now though.

So that's new. Seems the wrong way around, doesn't it? I'll probably attack the IACV again sometime and try and actually get the motor part off. I looked it up on Lings and the price of a new one is steep.

Had the spark plugs out today (an excuse to use my new torque wrench, wooo!)
They all look the same so I won't post all four.

    What do you guys think?

I properly cleaned the IACV by taking the motor off the end so I could actually spin the valve around. It was held on by 5 point star/torx (rather than 6). It was quite sticky despite my previous attempt at cleaning it. It changes gears a lot smoother now as the engine RPM matches slightly better and generally feels nicer to drive. I also decided to replace the throttle body gasket as it had a little damage (probably not enough to make it leak). Original problem still existed though.

I then changed the spark plugs as suggested as I really wasn't quite sure what I was looking at above. Although not perfect, it's significantly better with the new set. I replaced the NGK 2668 BKR8EIX IX Iridium with NGK 7746 IFR7G-11KS Laser Iridium plugs. I assume the other set were just no good from the get go or the car's ruining them.

The test drive was going to Comic con in London today.

Yeah, decent improvement. Much nicer to drive around the city now.

Still got something else to look into with it though!

Don't like the way the idle behaves since it was reflashed. It's not serious though - moving engine idle speed is about an extra 20% on top of the stationary idle speed. Not sure I like it.
