HRD stands for High Dynamic Range and is a photographic technique that allows a greater dynamic range between the lightest and darkest areas of an image than current standard digital imaging techniques.

Basically you take 3 (or more images) at different exposures (can use exposure bracketing on a SLR digital camera) so one is normal exposure, one is over exposed and one is under exposed.

The software (I use one called Photomatix) then blends the images so that it replaces the dark parts of the shot with the detail from the overexposed shot etc so that you have a constant light all over.

The iPhone app probably does this with one exposure but with a normal SLR you take 3 shots with a tripod and use the software to merge them. You can then play with lots of different styles for the finished image.

For exmple to get the first shot in post one above I took the following 3 images ...

    Overexposed

    Underexposed

    Normal

Some of the other styles which it can produce for example ...

See in the photo above the intercooler looks dark, whereas in the photo below in this style of photo the HDR has replaced the dark part with the HKS from the overexposed shot even although it was quite dark when I took all these shots.

Remember this thread can be used for any images not just HDR ones!

Cheers. It was all natural light, what little there was! It was fairly dark when I took those and they were on a fairly long exposure (the normal exposure shot was about 10 seconds from memory).

It's all easily done with the software.

I'll try and do some more at a meet soon.

I did a few at the Ace Cafe meet too ..

The Evo shot below shows up how the software uses the overexposed photo to add the detail to the discs/calipers which would not normally show up so clearly.

I am getting this thread a bit as it's supposed to be for non-car related pics LOL.
